DJ Sessons led by norman cook aka Fatboy slim is helping people with mental health problems in the hometown hove, East Sussex. The workshop is a partnership between a Sussex charity and the NHS, they hope the project can be extended nationwide.
“Music helped me tremendously during my own mental health journey as a DJ I try and help people escape and sometimes it’s good to escape your life or your stress for a couple of hours and I have always done that for a living but there were times when things have been falling apart, I find that I am doing it to myself as much as everybody. I need those two hours where I just lose myself to music and dance and flashing lights”. –DJ, FATBOY SLIM (norman cook)
While explaining his experience in the workshop he said “It was joyous being involved in this workshop because people haven’t seen or touched decks before.”He explained his feelings of astonishment by saying “Seeing someone go “ oh I can do that” is a beautiful thing “.
Many learners in the workshop also stated their experience with healing and how music helped them cope with their different mental issues.
“Doing something like this, just proves to me I can step outside of my everyday routine even though before I even got to the door I stopped ‘ amber can you actually do this?’ anxiety just overtook me. The feeling I am feeling now is that I will push myself next time”— Amber, a learner at the workshop
