In a primary election, voters in the US state of Wyoming got rid of Rep. Liz Cheney, who was one of the few Republicans to criticize former President Donald Trump.
Harriet Hageman, a relatively new politician who was backed by Trump, beat her badly.
Ms. Cheney, who is 56 years old, was one of only two people from her party to join the congressional committee looking into Mr. Trump’s efforts to stay in power.
Once, the Republican congresswoman who had served for three terms was a rising star.
All 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Mr. Trump after his supporters attacked the US Capitol building in January of last year are now the targets of a “burn the earth” campaign.
So far, four of them have quit, and in the primaries in Wyoming, Washington, Michigan, and South Carolina, four of his picks have won over the other four.
Only two people have been able to stay on the Republican ticket for another election.
Ms. Cheney was the last of the 10 people to face the Trumpian attack.
In other news, Sarah Palin, a Republican who wants to get back into politics, has made it to the November election in Alaska to represent the state in the House of Representatives.
This year, Alaska no longer has party primaries. Instead, the top four candidates from the open primaries will go on to the general election.
Another man about the same age agreed, “I’m a Democrat, and I came out to vote for Liz Cheney because she stands up for the truth, and that’s what we need in this country.”
Earlier, a group of Republicans in the suburbs of Cheyenne, the state capital, were knocking on doors to show their last-minute support for Ms. Cheney, even though they knew it would be hard.
Evan Wagner, who drove 17 hours from Austin, Texas, said, “She’s standing up for what’s right, and she’s saying she doesn’t care if she loses her job because she’s going to do what’s right.”
But nothing they did helped.
Most of the time, the media doesn’t pay much attention to Wyoming’s primaries.
People see Tuesday’s vote as a test, not just for the party but also for the country, of how much Donald Trump’s legacy and his claim that he didn’t win the election still hang over this country.
