Buffalo, New York, singer, songwriter, producer and dancer Avery Alexander has released his debut studio record, “The Perfect Crime”. The track arrived on 19 November 2021 and blends pop, rock, electro and electro-rock into a high-energy introduction to an artist with big ambitions: his stated goal is to become a “multi-Grammy Award-winning recording artist and full-throttle entertainer”.
Behind the Song
“The Perfect Crime” was produced by Ken Rutkowski, while Alexander wrote, co-produced, arranged and performed it. It was recorded at Outer Limit Recording Studio in Buffalo between August and October 2021.
The title is a playful metaphor. The “crime” Alexander plans to commit is stealing someone’s heart away from their current partner by being everything that partner is not. When WDAP Radio asked who the song was about, he answered: “A true gentleman never kisses and tells.”
A Fast Write, a Complex Arrangement
Alexander says the song came together surprisingly quickly. “Writing ‘The Perfect Crime’ came with such ease to me, which is so deranged to me because of how complex it is,” he said. “It took around fifteen minutes to fully write the song, including the verses, the bridge, the dance-break, the whole nine yards.”
The part he enjoyed most was the vocal production. The track contains more than 40 layers of background vocals and many harmonies. “It displays my musicality and shows people listening that I’m not just a recording artist, but that I’m a musician first,” he explained.
The Look
The single’s cover image came from a September 2021 photo shoot with editorial photographer Luke Copping, who said the aim was to create variety for marketing materials. Alexander describes his image as “neoteric” and “cutting edge”, and says standing apart from the crowd visually is as important to him as his sound.
