Prices and figures in this article are current as of October 24, 2026.
Is an ETH breakout coming? Probably not yet. A realistic Ethereum price prediction for the next few weeks keeps ETH stuck between roughly $2,350 and $2,800. The new MIT-backed tech that speeds up block delivery is a real upgrade, but ETF outflows and a weak Bitcoin matter far more to the price right now.
Ether traded near $2,393 on October 23, according to Fortune’s daily price data. That’s down about 13% in a month and roughly 52% below its August 2025 record of about $4,946. So let’s look at what the speed upgrade actually does, and what would need to change for a real move higher.
What the MIT-Backed Tech Actually Does for Ethereum
On October 20, a startup called Optimum switched on its mump2p protocol on Ethereum mainnet. Its core math, Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC), was co-invented by MIT professor Muriel Médard, who is Optimum’s CEO. The company was incubated at MIT and Harvard, according to its launch announcement.
Faster block delivery, not faster blocks
Here’s the part most headlines blur. Ethereum still makes a new block every 12 seconds. What mump2p speeds up is how fast each block travels across the network to validators.
Normally, Ethereum nodes pass blocks along with a system called GossipSub. Mump2p runs beside it as a “sidecar.” It splits each block into coded pieces, so a validator can rebuild the block once it has enough pieces, instead of waiting for every byte. If the sidecar fails, the node simply falls back to GossipSub. Consensus rules and signing keys don’t change at all.
The numbers so far
- Speed: Optimum says early mainnet tests showed blocks arriving about 2.42 times faster than over GossipSub.
- Consistency: Arrival times were 7.88 times less variable.
- Adoption: 16 node operators and about 22,000 validators use it, covering over 1.4 million ETH, or a bit more than 3% of staked ether.
- Big backer: Liquid staking platform ether.fi now requires all 12 of its node operators to run it.
One caution: these are the company’s own figures, and it hasn’t published its full test method. Its testnet claims were even higher, at 6 to 20 times faster. You can see the project’s details on the official Optimum website.

Does Faster Block Propagation Move the ETH Price?
Not directly. Faster delivery mostly helps validators. When a block reaches them late, they can miss votes and lose small rewards. Operators far from big data hubs feel that most, so quicker delivery means steadier income for them.
That’s good for the network’s health. But it doesn’t change ETH’s supply, and it doesn’t create new buyers overnight. Think of it like a faster highway between warehouses. Shipping improves, but demand for the product doesn’t suddenly double.
Where it could matter later is scaling. Ethereum wants bigger blocks, and bigger blocks are harder to spread quickly. Tools that move data faster make that goal easier to reach.
Why the Ethereum Price Is Stuck Right Now
Ether ETFs are bleeding cash
U.S. spot Ether ETFs saw about $1.08 billion in net outflows in October through October 21, based on SoSoValue data. That’s the largest monthly withdrawal of 2026. Another $110.6 million left on October 22. When big funds sell, it’s hard for the price to climb.
Bitcoin isn’t helping
ETH still follows Bitcoin, which sat near $81,500 on October 23. Bitcoin is well below its October 2025 peak, and the whole crypto market has been in bear mode for most of this year. ETH is down about 19% in 2026.
The next big upgrade just slipped
Ethereum’s next major upgrade, Glamsterdam, was set to go live on the Hoodi test network on October 26. On October 22, the Ethereum Foundation postponed it to study how one change, EIP-8037, interacts with existing smart contracts. No new date has been set. That likely pushes back a mainnet launch that developers had hoped to see in December.
Ethereum Price Prediction: Key Levels and Forecasts
Traders are watching a few clear lines on the chart:
| Level | Price | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Major resistance | $2,807 | September 21 high; a close above it breaks the downtrend |
| Near resistance | $2,500 | Round number ETH keeps failing to reclaim |
| Key support | $2,350 | Near the October lows |
| Next support | $2,220 | August 2026 low |
Longer-range Ethereum price prediction targets are a mixed bag. In January, Standard Chartered called 2026 “the year of Ethereum” and set a $7,500 year-end target. By February, it had cut that to $4,000 and warned ETH could fall toward $1,400 first. On October 18, 24/7 Wall St. said ETH has a low chance of reaching $3,000 before the end of the year.
So what does a breakout really need? In my view, three things working together: a daily close above $2,807, a return to weekly ETF inflows, and a firmer Bitcoin. The Fed’s October 27–28 meeting could tip that balance either way.
How to Play ETH While You Wait
- Don’t buy the headline. Tech news rarely moves ETH by itself. Watch ETF flow reports instead.
- Use price alerts. Set one at $2,350 and one at $2,807, so you react to real breaks, not noise.
- Skip leverage. In a choppy range, borrowed positions get wiped out fast.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Optimum’s mump2p?
Mump2p is a networking add-on for Ethereum validators built by Optimum, a company led by MIT professor Muriel Médard. It uses coded data pieces to spread new blocks faster than Ethereum’s default system. It went live on mainnet on October 20, 2026, and works alongside existing software rather than replacing it.
Will Ethereum reach $3,000 in 2026?
It’s possible, but analysts see it as unlikely. ETH trades near $2,390, so it needs about a 25% rally. That would probably require ETF inflows to return and Bitcoin to recover. A daily close above $2,807 would be the first sign that $3,000 is back on the table.
What is Ethereum’s all-time high?
Ethereum’s all-time high is about $4,946, reached in August 2025. As of late October 2026, ETH trades roughly 52% below that level. Getting back there would need more than a doubling from current prices, which most forecasts don’t expect this year.
When is the Glamsterdam upgrade?
Glamsterdam’s test run on the Hoodi network was planned for October 26, 2026, but the Ethereum Foundation postponed it on October 22. No new date has been announced. Developers had discussed a December mainnet launch, so that timeline will likely slip too.
Is Ethereum a good investment right now?
That depends on your goals and risk tolerance. Ethereum leads in stablecoins and decentralized finance, but ETH is in a downtrend with heavy ETF selling. If you buy, use money you can afford to lose, spread out your purchases, and consider talking with a licensed financial advisor.
The Bottom Line on an ETH Breakout
The MIT-backed mump2p protocol makes Ethereum’s network faster and steadier, and that’s real progress. But it’s a plumbing upgrade, not a price trigger.
For now, ETH’s direction depends on ETF flows, Bitcoin, and the Fed. Your best next step is to watch the October 28 Fed decision and whether ETH can hold $2,350. If it closes above $2,807 later, that’s when breakout talk gets serious.
