History of Hollywood Coney Island
The origin of the term Coney Island is debatable. However the region was historically part of the colonial town of Gravesend. It had become a beach resort by the mid-nineteenth century, and funfairs had been erect there by the late nineteenth century. The Coney Island branch of the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is situated at 1901 Mermaid Avenue, near the junction of West 19th Street. It began as an unattended deposit station in 1911. It relocated to the old Coney Island Times headquarters ten years later and then became adequately staffed. An additional branch was completed in 1954. The library was billed as “the first-ever library erected on stilts above the Atlantic Ocean,” as stated on the BPL website. After being devastated by Hurricane Sandy, the branch was restored in 2013.
