Spoiler warning: this article discusses events from My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia) chapters 285 to 287.
During the Paranormal Liberation War arc, Kohei Horikoshi delivered a long streak of intense chapters week after week. Chapter 287 followed Bakugo’s heroic sacrifice and pushed Deku into one of the strangest situations of the series.
Where the Story Stood
Bakugo had thrown himself in front of Deku to protect him from Shigaraki, and All For One, speaking from inside Shigaraki’s body, mocked the sacrifice. That pushed Deku over the edge. Ignoring his mentors’ advice to keep a clear head, he charged in blindly. All For One seemed pleased, smiling from within Shigaraki as Deku came closer.
Meanwhile, Gigantomachia sensed two “masters”, All For One and Shigaraki, and the heroes worked to contain him while sending word about Shigaraki to the other battlefronts.
Into the World of Quirks
When Shigaraki’s hand made contact with Deku, Deku suddenly found himself in a strange inner space connected to the Quirks themselves. All For One appeared to have restrained Shigaraki there, and Nana Shimura, the seventh holder of One For All and All Might’s mentor, appeared to help Deku. This setting allowed interactions between the holders of One For All and their oldest enemy, and fans hoped it might reveal more about the previous users, including those whose faces had not yet been shown.
Key Questions Fans Asked

- Can Gigantomachia be stopped? His confusion between two masters gave the heroes a rare chance to contain him.
- Why did Shigaraki seem to resist All For One? Shigaraki wanted to defeat Deku on his own terms, so All For One taking control of his body went against his wishes.
- Will Deku disintegrate? Being touched by Shigaraki usually means Decay, but readers suspected Eraser Head or All For One’s own plans had prevented the worst.
