Our eyes are one of our most important senses. It is often said that around 80% of the information we take in about our surroundings comes through our eyes. Eye exams can even reveal signs of conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, because the eye is one of the few places doctors can see blood vessels directly. It is no surprise, then, that supplements promising better vision are popular. Visium Plus is one of them.
What Is Visium Plus?
Visium Plus is an oral supplement marketed to support eye health and protect vision as we age. Its sales material credits its creation to a man named Daniel Adams from Florida, who says he spent years researching herbal remedies. It is made in the United States and is said to contain a blend of 16 plant extracts and vitamins.
Common Eye Health Ingredients
Eye supplements typically include some of the following. Check the product label for the exact formula and doses.
- Lutein and zeaxanthin: pigments concentrated in the retina that help filter blue light. They are part of the AREDS2 formula studied by the US National Eye Institute for slowing advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
- Vitamins C and E, and zinc: antioxidants and minerals also used in the AREDS2 formula.
- Bilberry and other berry extracts: rich in antioxidants, although evidence for vision benefits is limited.
- Herbal extracts: various plant ingredients are added for antioxidant effects, usually with little eye-specific research.
What Can a Supplement Realistically Do?
Marketing for Visium Plus suggests it can improve or even restore vision. That claim should be treated with caution. The strongest evidence for eye supplements is for specific nutrient formulas in people who already have intermediate AMD, where they may slow progression. There is no good evidence that supplements can restore lost vision, fix blurry eyesight caused by refractive errors, or replace glasses or medical treatment. We found no independent clinical trials on Visium Plus itself.
Proven Ways to Protect Your Eyes
- Have regular eye exams, especially after 40 or if you have diabetes.
- Wear UV-protective sunglasses outdoors.
- Do not smoke; smoking increases the risk of AMD and cataracts.
- Eat plenty of leafy greens, colourful vegetables and oily fish.
- Take breaks from screens using the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Safety
Talk to your doctor before taking eye supplements if you are pregnant, take medication or have a health condition. Some ingredients can interact with drugs or be unsuitable in high doses.
Verdict
A supplement such as Visium Plus may provide nutrients that support general eye health, but it should not be seen as a cure for vision problems. If your eyesight is changing, an eye doctor is the right first step. Statements about this product have not been evaluated by the FDA.
