An electric mountain bike is a great way to enjoy summer, whether you are heading to a campsite, cruising along a beach path or exploring trails with family. But hot weather is tough on lithium-ion batteries. High temperatures can shorten battery life and, in rare cases, increase fire risk. Follow these tips to keep your electric bikes safe and performing well all summer.
1. Keep batteries out of direct sunlight

Leaving your e-bike in the sun on a hot day can push battery temperatures well above safe levels, which speeds up wear on the cells. Park in the shade whenever possible and store your bike indoors. If you can’t bring the whole bike inside, remove the battery and keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct light and heat sources. Avoid leaving batteries in a hot car or anywhere temperatures may exceed around 40°C (104°F).
Some models, such as the Magicycle Ocelot Pro, are designed with easily removable batteries to make this simple, and the brand has offered discounts at checkout on selected models.
2. Avoid riding hard in extreme heat
Most e-bike batteries have a battery management system that cuts power if the internal temperature gets too high. Even so, repeatedly pushing a battery in extreme heat stresses it. On very hot days, ride during cooler parts of the day, use lower assist levels and take breaks in the shade. Let the battery cool to room temperature before charging it after a ride.
3. Keep batteries away from salt water

Salt water is highly corrosive to electrical components. Avoid riding through seawater, and if your bike gets splashed, rinse lightly with fresh water (never a high-pressure jet), then dry it thoroughly with a clean cloth. Remove the battery and make sure the contacts are completely dry before reconnecting. Regular ebike maintenance, including keeping the chain clean and lubricated, helps prevent corrosion.
4. Never leave a charging battery unattended
Charge your battery in a cool, well-ventilated area on a hard, non-flammable surface, and avoid charging overnight or when you are out. Always use the charger supplied by the manufacturer, and unplug once fully charged.
Why lithium batteries can catch fire
- Manufacturing defects: faults in cells can cause internal short circuits.
- Poor design: cramming cells into small spaces without adequate cooling or protection increases risk.
- Misuse or damage: crashes, punctures, water damage, overheating or tampering with the pack.
- Low-quality components: cheap cells and chargers without proper safety certification.
Buy quality and stay safe
The best protection is a high-quality battery from a reputable brand, certified to recognised safety standards such as UL 2849 for e-bike systems. Inspect your battery regularly for swelling, damage or unusual heat, and stop using it if you notice any problems. With a little care, you can enjoy electric bikes for adults safely all summer long.
