Spoiler warning: this article covers events from Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime episodes 166 and 167.
The Boruto anime spent part of 2020 on an anime-original story built around stolen Hashirama cells and the mysterious organisation Kara. Episode 166 ended with Team 7 suffering one of its worst defeats, setting up an important turning point for Boruto and Sarada in episode 167.
Recap of Episode 166
The episode showed just how strong Kara’s Inners are. Deepa, a member of Kara’s inner circle, overwhelmed Boruto and Sarada. Even Boruto’s most powerful Rasengan could not scratch Deepa’s body, showing a level of strength far beyond what young genin could handle. Elsewhere, the scientist Victor proved to be a dangerous opponent for experienced Jonin Konohamaru and Mugino.
Mitsuki used his Snake Sage abilities to rescue his teammates before things got even worse, but the mission was still a failure: the Hashirama cells fell into Kara’s hands.
What Happens in Episode 167
- Return to Konoha: the injured Team 7 makes its way home, where Boruto and Sarada receive medical treatment while Mitsuki goes to Orochimaru for care.
- A shared resolution: stung by their defeat, Boruto and Sarada admit they are not yet strong enough and decide to train harder so they can face Deepa again.
- Konohamaru’s report: Konohamaru reports to the Seventh Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki, and asks permission to keep investigating Victor and his connection to Kara.
Why This Episode Matters
This anime-original story bridges the gap between the anime and the manga. Many fans saw it as a way to explain how Sarada reaches a three-tomoe Sharingan and how Boruto’s skills develop before the events of the manga’s battle against Boro. It also lays the groundwork for Kara becoming the series’ main threat.
Release Date and Where to Watch
Episode 167 aired in Japan in September 2020. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is available to stream legally on Crunchyroll in many regions, and episodes have also been available on Hulu in the United States. Official streaming is the best way to support the anime.
