Moroccan Scott Cannon and his twin sister, Monroe, were born on 30 April 2011 to two of the biggest names in American entertainment: singer-songwriter Mariah Carey and television host, comedian and rapper Nick Cannon. This article focuses on the family he belongs to, from his famous parents to his many siblings.
Heritage
Moroccan has a mixed heritage. His mother, Mariah Carey, has Irish-American ancestry on her mother’s side and African-American and Venezuelan ancestry on her father’s side, while his father, Nick Cannon, is African-American.
How the twins got their names
Mariah wanted both twins to have names beginning with “M”. Monroe was named in tribute to Marilyn Monroe, one of Mariah’s idols. Moroccan’s name comes from the Moroccan-style room in Mariah’s New York apartment where Nick proposed. For the full story behind the names, see our profile of Moroccan. Within the family, the twins are affectionately known as “Roc” and “Roe”.
His parents
Mariah Carey is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, famous for her five-octave vocal range and hits such as “Hero”, “We Belong Together” and the holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You”.
Nick Cannon rose to fame as a teenager on Nickelodeon’s All That and went on to star in films such as Drumline, host America’s Got Talent and create and host Wild ‘N Out and The Masked Singer.
The couple married in 2008, separated in 2014 and finalised their divorce in 2016, when the twins were five. They have continued to co-parent and often appear together at family events.
His siblings
Monroe is Moroccan’s only full sibling, but he has many half-siblings on his father’s side. Nick Cannon has welcomed several more children since the twins were born, including Golden and Powerful Queen with Brittany Bell, and twins Zion and Zillion with Abby De La Rosa, among others. That makes Moroccan one of the eldest in a very large blended family.
Is Moroccan on social media?
Moroccan does not have public social media accounts of his own. Fans mostly see him through occasional photos and videos shared by his parents, particularly Mariah, who has featured the twins in holiday posts and performances.
A life in the spotlight
Being the child of two celebrities means attention from a very young age, but both parents have spoken about wanting their children to have as normal a childhood as possible. Whether Moroccan eventually follows his parents into entertainment remains to be seen, but he is growing up surrounded by music, creativity and a large, close-knit family.
