Spoiler warning: this article covers events from My Hero Academia chapters 277 and 278 in the Paranormal Liberation War arc.
The Paranormal Liberation War arc turned My Hero Academia into an all-out war between the pro heroes and the newly merged Paranormal Liberation Front. By chapter 278, the fighting was split across several battlefields, and every page raised the stakes.
Where the Story Stood
At the hospital, the heroes were racing to stop a freshly awakened Tomura Shigaraki before he could reach his full power. Eraser Head was the key to that plan, as his Quirk could cancel Tomura’s devastating Decay, which had already wiped out a huge part of a city during the earlier fight with Re-Destro. At the same time, another group of heroes was raiding the Liberation Front’s mansion headquarters.
Chapter 278: The Mansion Battle
Chapter 278 focused on the mansion. Mt. Lady took on Gigantomachia, a towering villain whose strength and stamina make him one of the hardest opponents in the series. The heroes suffered heavy damage: Mt. Lady was thrown aside by Gigantomachia, and Dabi’s blue flames hit Kamui Woods. Re-Destro also returned to the fight, and attempts to take him down did not go as planned.
Midnight tried to use her sleep-inducing Quirk on Gigantomachia, but members of the League of Villains, including Mr. Compress and Dabi, stepped in to stop her. The chapter ended with the heroes determined to keep fighting despite their injuries.
Why This Chapter Mattered
The mansion fight showed how dangerous the combined villain forces had become. Gigantomachia in particular was a problem the heroes had no easy answer for, and the injuries suffered here had consequences later in the arc. It also gave lesser-seen pros like Mt. Lady and Kamui Woods some of their biggest moments in the manga.
Release Date
After a short break in Weekly Shonen Jump, chapter 278 was released officially on 19 July 2020. At the time, the series was published weekly, apart from scheduled breaks.
