Spoiler warning: this article discusses the anime-original arc of Black Clover around episode 146.
Near the end of its original TV run, the Black Clover anime told an anime-original story about two mysterious groups: the Devil Banishers and the Devil Believers. Episode 146, titled “People Who Worship the Devil”, moved that story forward and set up a rescue mission.
What Led Up to Episode 146
The Black Bulls had saved Marie, Gauche’s younger sister, from being executed by the Devil Banishers. It later emerged that the Banishers and their leader, Kabwa, were being used by another group: the Devil Believers. Using information from Kabwa, Magic Emperor Julius warned that Asta’s grimoire may have been the real target all along.
The chaos allowed the Devil Believers to escape with Asta’s grimoire while holding Secre prisoner.
Episode 146 Synopsis and Spoilers
- A captains’ meeting: the trailer showed Julius calling all the Magic Knight captains together to share a plan for rescuing Secre and tracking down the Devil Believers.
- The rescue team: although the synopsis did not name who would go after Secre, the preview suggested that Asta, Noelle and Magna would be on the trail of their enemies.
- A surprise: the synopsis teased that the Black Bulls would find the Devil Believers, only to discover something unexpected.
- Marie and Theresa: the preview also showed Gauche arguing with Sister Theresa, hinting at more scenes involving Marie.
Are the Devil Believers Linked to the Spade Kingdom?
Some fans suspected the Devil Believers came from the Spade Kingdom, given their focus on devils. The arc was anime-original, but it was designed to fit with the manga’s events before its six-month time skip, so a link to the wider devil storyline seemed plausible.
Release and Where to Watch
Episode 146 aired in Japan in September 2020. Black Clover is available to stream officially on Crunchyroll in many regions.
