Spoiler warning: this article discusses events from episode 24 of the 2020 Shadowverse anime.
The Shadowverse anime, based on Cygames’ popular digital card game, follows Hiro Ryugasaki, a boy who discovers the game on a mysterious smartphone and is drawn into a series of battles that turn out to be about far more than winning cards. Episode 24 delivered some of the biggest revelations of the series so far.
Episode 24 Recap
Hiro’s battle against Leo continues inside a courthouse hall. Leo insists that Hiro must prove he is a worthy opponent, because only then can Hiro’s true power be awakened, a power that may be needed to save the world.
During the duel, Leo finally tells Hiro the story of his father. Leo reveals that he once worked as a partner to Hiro’s father, Eiji Ryugasaki. Their research centred on the Blessing Tree, which eventually became a countdown to disaster. When their work turned dangerous, Eiji went to rescue Asagi but could not reach her in time. That was the day the Blessing Tree became the Tree of Woe.
The biggest shock comes next: Asagi, chosen as the vessel for Woe, is Hiro’s mother. Leo tells Hiro that if he wants to learn the full truth about what happened, he will have to defeat him first.
Why This Episode Matters
Episode 24 changes Hiro’s journey from a personal quest to become a better player into a fight to uncover his family’s past and stop a looming catastrophe. It also reframes Leo, turning him from a simple rival into someone with deep ties to Hiro’s parents.
